Guided by kuleana, aloha, and l\u014dkahi, this initiative centers long-term, community-led recovery\u2014ensuring that the people of Maui are not just surviving, but thriving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">One powerful story of hope comes from Ikaika and Janelle Hiapo, whose Lahaina home was lost just five years after it was built. With nowhere to go and their future uncertain, the couple received critical support through K\u0101ko\u02bbo Maui. They were not only connected to stable housing but also received a grant that helped them begin rebuilding. Today, as construction nears completion, their home stands as a symbol of strength and the deep care of a community committed to lifting one another up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">That same care is echoed in the words of Kukui Keahi, Associate Director of K\u0101ko\u02bbo Maui and a wildfire survivor herself:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 30pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\"><i>\u201cWorking at K\u0101ko\u02bbo Maui has given me the opportunity to create and administer programs that I know\u2014through my own experience as a survivor of the Maui wildfires\u2014will make a meaningful impact on our community. As a multigenerational resident of Lahaina, this work is deeply personal; it&#8217;s an honor to serve the very people and place that shaped who I am. What makes this journey even more powerful is serving alongside fellow survivors. Our shared experience creates a bond that fuels trust, compassion, and a deep commitment to ensuring our recovery is led by and for the community we love so dearly.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">K\u0101ko\u02bbo Maui is more than just a program\u2014it\u2019s a community of passionate individuals, like Kukui, who have lived through the aftermath of tragedy and turned that experience into a source of strength, connection, and purpose. From the beginning, K\u0101ko\u02bbo Maui has served as a trusted recovery partner, guiding thousands of wildfire survivors toward stability and hope. One of its most impactful milestones is the opening of the K\u0101ko\u02bbo Maui Relief and Aid Services Center in Kahului\u2014a trauma-informed, culturally rooted hub offering wraparound services, navigation support, and a safe space for healing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">To build back stronger and ensure Maui\u2019s future is rooted in local leadership, CNHA expanded its workforce development efforts. Through the Hawaiian Trades Academy, nearly 400 Maui residents have earned certifications in debris removal and construction\u2014gaining meaningful employment while contributing directly to rebuilding their island home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">K\u0101ko\u02bbo Maui also provides:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Rental Assistance &amp; Case Navigation for displaced families<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Rebuild Support with free or low-cost architectural plans, debris removal guidance, and permitting help<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Housing Support Services to help families return with dignity<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">A partnership with Hawai\u02bbi Energy supplying qualifying Lahaina households with Energy Star appliances like washers, dryers, and refrigerators through the K\u0101ko\u02bbo Maui Distribution Center<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Throughout this journey, CNHA has remained deeply committed to listening to the community, evolving with their needs, and staying rooted in its mission. Kilohana is a collaborative of travel industry experts and community leaders committed to fulfilling the Hawai\u2018i Destination Brand Marketing & Management Services contract for the United States Major Market Area awarded by the Hawai\u2018i Tourism Authority (HTA) to CNHA on June 2, 2022.<\/p><p>\u201cWe are very pleased and grateful to have Doug lead the Transition Team,\u201d said <strong>K\u016bhi\u014d Lewis,<\/strong> CNHA Chief Executive Officer. \u201cDoug brings a wealth of visitor industry knowledge and experience to this role. This, combined with his deep love and appreciation for Hawai\u2018i\u2019s culture and community, makes Doug the perfect person to lead our team\u2019s transition to support HTA\u2019s vision of a new, regenerative model for tourism.\u201d<\/p><p> <\/p><p>\u201cWe understand and respect the integrity of the contract procurement process that HTA is still working through. We also felt it was important that we continue to move forward with our planning so that the Kilohana is ready, pending the outcome of that process,\u201d said Lewis.<\/p><p>As a seasoned leader with nearly 40 years of hospitality experience, Chang has held numerous leadership positions in the visitor industry, including serving as Chair of the Hawai\u2018i Tourism Authority, General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Kapalua Bay, General Manager of Hotel H\u0101na-Maui, and Hotel Manager of the Kaua\u2018i Marriott Resort and Beach Club. He recently returned to serve on the Board of Directors for the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association (NaHHA), an organization where he was a founding board member and past President, and also the Hawai\u02bbi Tourism & Lodging Association (HTLA). Chang is an alumnus of Kamehameha Schools.<\/p><p>\u201cAs a native Hawaiian and industry leader, this is an exciting time to be a part of HTA\u2019s effort to transform the model for tourism in Hawai\u2018i,\u201d said Chang. \u201cEmbracing regenerative destination management will make both our communities and our visitor industry stronger. The Kilohana Collective is comprised of strong, passionate, and talented professionals, and the transition team seeks to support their smooth transition into fulfilling the North American marketing and destination management contract.
