I Mana Ka ʻŌiwi Holiday Mākeke (Market Place)

This holiday season we’re excited to partner with one of our members, Maile Girl Designs, to bring to you I Mana Ka ʻŌiwi, a Native Hawaiian holiday mākeke (marketplace) designed to help our microenterprise and small business owners gain access to one of Oahu’s busiest shopping malls.

We extend a BIG mahalo to Kamehameha Schools and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs for their support of this venture.

Location and Hours of Operation

Location: Second floor of Windward Shopping Center (46-056 Kamehameha Highway).  The retail space is located in a large (6,300 square foot) retail storefront on the second floor of Windward Shopping Center facing the center stage.

Duration of Operation:  This is a Holiday Mākeke and will be in operation from November 26 – December 28, 2019

Marketing information

The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement(CNHA) will promote this venue and the many activities planned within the storefront through its newsletter, paid ads, and its email distribution which reaches over 30,000 subscribers.  CNHA has also partnered with some Hawaiian Trust agencies to help with our marketing efforts

Windward Mall will also support our promotional efforts through its channels.

Maile Girls Designs and CNHA is coordinating a calendar of activities within the storefront to attract customers.  Activities include a fashion show, cultural demonstrations, weekly ōlelo Hawaiʻi day, book signing and other cultural holiday attractions.

Windward Mall is one of Hawaii’s busiest shopping centers in the State servicing the entire windward district of Oahu – Population – 123,347

Fee Structure

This venture is meant to help microenterprises and small businesses access a retail market space.  A 15% commission will be applied on all sales to cover overhead, marketing and utilities. The rental fees outlined below help cover the lease rent and remodeling costs.

All options below will receive the following benefits:

  • You will be provided a reserved retail space or reserved shelf space (see fee structure below)
  • You are welcome to staff your section of the store, however, communal sales/customer representatives will be provided to support sales transactions and manage customer flow
  • Utilities included
  • Storage space
  • Changing rooms
  • Some fixtures to display your products (not guaranteed)
  • Participation in our digital and print advertisements

Available Space:

Fixed Space within the Mākeke for One-Week (Mon-Sun)

  • $1,000 for one week

Shelf Space within the Mākeke for Five Weeks

  • $500 for all five weeks

Fixed Space within the Mākeke for Five Weeks

  • $3,000 for all five weeks  (limited number of available spots)

CNHA is also offering financing for any of the options above.  Its a simple approval process.  One year financing at 5% interest with no early payoff penalty and a 2% processing fee.  If you are interested, please email loan@hawaiiancouncil.org
