Events and Registration

Throughout the year, CNHA coordinates events that provide opportunities for Native Hawaiian individuals and organizations to network, share information, discuss critical issues, and build consensus. We also post the events of our members.

2009 CNHA Grants Forums - Oahu: July 24-25, 2009 at the Dole Ballrooms
CNHA, in partnership with the
Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, hosts Grants Forums throughout the state to increase access to valuable information on various local and national funding opportunities and share best practices in proposal development strategies.  This is a great opportunity the nonprofit and for-profit community to network with funders, meet and learn from successful grantees and expand your fundraising knowledge, right in your back yard.

Registration is $200 for nonprofit organizations and $250 for for-profit entities or small businesses!  To reserve your seat today, click here to register online.  You may download and complete the registration form by clicking here.  Registration includes continental breakfast, lunch, all materials, and access to a networking reception.  Scholarships for discounted registration fees are made possible through event sponsors and the Hawaiian Way Fund.

Scholarships are made possible through sponsorships and partnerships!  Thirty-one community members representing community-based organizations attended the January 9th Grants Forum on Hawaii island. Contact Ms. Rosalee Puaoi, CNHA Community Development Specialist, for more information via telephone at 808.596.8155 (from Oahu), toll-free at 800.709.2642 (from neighbor islands) or via e-mail at events@hawaiiancouncil.org.

2009 Symposium on Native Land Claim Settlements
Over the last decade, Native Hawaiian programs and our unique trust relationship with the state of Hawaii and the federal government have been challenged in court.  Indeed, as Hawaiians, we know the status of our relationship, and the impact of historical events on our way of life, our culture and the lands and resources in our homelands.  This Symposium has been organized at the reqeust and in partnership with homestead associations across the State, to further our understanding of land settlements between the federal governmnet and Native peoples.

This Symposium will examine the most recent Hawaii Supreme Court ruling regarding lands in Hawaii, provide an update on the status of the U.S. Supreme Court hearing in February, and will review settlement agreements of the Maori, Navajo and Alaska Natives, as well as the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act.  There are always two primary tools that impact Native peoples in the United States - Lawsuits and Legislation.  As part of a series of Symposia hosted in 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2009 around Native self-governance, participants will examine how settlement agreements are forged and inventory the priorities of member organizations and homestead associations.

Scholarships are made possible through sponsorships and partnerships with DHHL and the SCHHA.  Over 100 community members representing community-based organizations attended the March 20th Symposium.  More information on future Forums will be posted here.

California Native Hawaiian Forum
The 2009 California Native Hawaiian Forum was hosted by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, in partnership with the Kanaka Maoli o Kaleponi, Inc. and Kaleponi Advocates for Hawaiian Affairs.  This valuable Forum shared information on financial resoruces and grants for nonprofits.  The agendaalso covered current public policy legislation such as S.381 Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act and the event reviewed the policy priorities of the Native Hawaiian Policy Center.  In addition, participants received information on two important Federal grant programs: the Native Hawaiian Education Program and the Administration for Native Americans.  Over 50 individuals representing Native Hawaiian community-based organizations located on the continent attended the event.
